Mary Burke helped build Trek Bicycle Corporation into the largest independent bicycle manufacturer in America with bikes used by Lance Armstrong in the Tour de France. As Director of European Operations for Trek, she built the business from the ground up in seven European countries. With her work at Trek, as President of the Boys and Girls Club, and now as the Wisconsin Department of Commerce Secretary, her business experience stretches from Wisconsin to Europe and Asia. She discussed her past experiences with Trek and her new role in building Wisconsin’s economy.

Debra Blum, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, UW journalism professor, speaks. Deborah Blum’s series of articles on ethical issues and dilemmas of primate research led to her book, “The Monkey Wars,” which won the 1992 Pulitzer Prize. Her most recent book, Love at Goon Park: Harry Harlow and the Science of Affection, was named a 2002 best book of the year by Publisher's Weekly, Library Journal, Discover magazine and NPR's Science Friday. She has also written, Sex on the Brain, a 1997 New York Times Notable Book. Blum has been a professor of journalism at UW-Madison since 1997. She has written for the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, Discover, Psychology Today, Life, Health, the Utne Reader, Mother Jones and discovery.com. Hear her talk about her experiences as an award winning science writer, author, freelancer, and professor.

The AWC Career Quest is the most visible way our professional association gives back to the community. Through our support of the AWC Career Quest, communications students have access to area professionals in many different disciplines. The round table format allows engaging one-on-one interaction between students and professionals. The Catch a Rising Star Scholarship will be presented.

For 10 years, Susan Lampert Smith traveled the state to write the "On Wisconsin" column, which won several regional awards for its depictions of the offbeat people, places and events in Wisconsin. In 2004, she began writing the Metro column for the Wisconsin State Journal. She has won the National Agricultural Journalism Award, as well as many first place awards from the Wisconsin Newspaper Association and the Milwaukee Press Club. She is a lecturer at the University of Wisconsin.
